After all the hard work, you need a great title.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But writing a title is a lot different from writing a full-length novel or even a short story. Writing a title takes creativity, but it isn\u2019t storytelling\u2014it\u2019s marketing. Your potential readers see a title before they see anything in chapter one, and it has to hook them. Companies spend fortunes on finding the right name for new products\u2014names that will resonate with consumers\u2014and so should you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A good title should be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Attention grabbing<\/strong>. You can be provocative, controversial, exciting, clever, romantic, or mysterious. But try to choose a title that makes people stop and pay attention to it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Memorable<\/strong>. If your mother recommends your book to her bridge club and they can\u2019t remember the name of it when they get home, they can\u2019t buy it.<\/li>\n<li>An informative title is much more important for nonfiction than for fiction. If you mention your title to someone and they ask you what the book is about, you need a better title. Be clever, but clear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Easy to say. <\/strong>You want to build word of mouth? Don\u2019t use jargon or professional lingo on the cover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Subtitles: Yes, Absolutely<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nonfiction absolutely needs a subtitle to put your short, snappy, attention-grabbing, memorable, informative, and clear title into context. For example:<\/p>\n<p><em>Our Sister Republics:<\/em> The United States in an Age of American Revolutions<\/p>\n<p><em>Dust &amp; Grooves:<\/em> Adventures in Record Collecting<\/p>\n<p><em>Cook Korean!<\/em> A Comic Book with Recipes<\/p>\n<p>However, even in fiction, a tagline or other information can give readers a more complete understanding of what your book is about. You\u2019ve often seen \u201c<em>New York Times <\/em>best-selling author\u201d across the cover, which suggests that the writer is very accomplished. Perhaps the cover contains series information like \u201cA Southern vampire novel.\u201d The cover might have a review quote, such as \u201cHaunting, compelling and brilliant\u2014The Times\u201d on Donna Tartt\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29ElSNw\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Secret History<\/em><\/a>. Or it might have a direct tagline, such as \u201cA gripping serial killer thriller\u201d on Robert Bryndza\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29BM08r\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Girl in the Ice<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting to the Title that Sells Your Book<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To write a great book title, approach its creation in a different way than you thought about your manuscript. Try these techniques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Understand Your Book <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Find the nugget. Are you marketing a nonfiction series\u2014say cookbooks, diet books, or how-to books? Brand that series. Think of the success of the \u201cDummies\u201d line\u2014from <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29BNjUI\"><em>Writing a Romance Novel for Dummies<\/em><\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29vzRqr\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Welding for Dummies<\/em><\/a>. That\u2019s a franchise that never quits.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re writing a standalone book, make that title: Stand. Out. Alone. No one will forget Dave Eggers\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29BKFhY\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius<\/em><\/a> in a hurry.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re writing fiction, make sure that the title conveys enough information and mood that readers are certain that they\u2019ll be getting a scare, a puzzle, or a warm fuzzy (<em>The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, Storm Prey, Scandal and Scoundrel<\/em>). Communicate that emotion. Or go with a title that emerges directly from the book\u2019s subject, such as the protagonist\u2019s place in history (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29BLCql\">The Last of the Mohicans<\/a>)<\/em> or unique personality or attitude (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29BLZBg\"><em>Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary<\/em><\/a>), or even the antagonist (<em>Hannibal<\/em>, <em>Jaws)<\/em>, a McGuffin (<em>The Da Vinci Code<\/em>, <em>The Purloined Letter<\/em>), or the theme (<em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em>)<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brainstorm Potential Titles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spend a few days writing down every title idea you can think of. Incorporate clever or noteworthy phrases from the book. Keep the main title as short as possible and add a clarifying subtitle or tagline.<\/p>\n<p>Use relevant keywords to improve search ability. If you\u2019re writing nonfiction, promise a benefit (\u201cHow to\u2026) or offer a solution (\u201c10 Ways to\u2026\u201d). Use metaphors or symbols associated with the themes in your book.<\/p>\n<p>To help your audience remember your title, use alliteration, alter a popular phrase (<em>The War of Art<\/em>), or rework a trope (<em>Confessions of \u2026 <\/em>or <em>The End of \u2026<\/em>). To stimulate your creativity, try a random title generator, or even an advertising copywriters\u2019 manual!<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Google Your Ideas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t want to test anything that\u2019s already out there. Writers can\u2019t copyright titles, so technically you could publish your book about how to build wren houses as <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29BMSKf\"><em>The Adventures of Moby Dick<\/em><\/a>. But your readers will be furious.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Test Your Favorites<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Start with your best titles and subtitles, at least 10\u201320 of them. Test the titles and subtitles in different iterations with Google AdWords, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Survey Monkey<\/a>, Pickfu, or Google Survey. Just don\u2019t test your friends and relations or ask them about what works, because subjective opinions aren\u2019t much use in the marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>Try to test with people who enjoyed your previous work, people who don\u2019t know your work but like to read similar work by other authors, and finally, people who don\u2019t read much but enjoy movies or other entertainment that has something in common with your work. That\u2019s the way to find out if a broad audience will both find your book and pick it up. Testing isn\u2019t terribly expensive, and the results can be more than worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pay Attention to the Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Listen to what your readers tell you. But make sure your data is unbiased. That is\u2014again\u2014don\u2019t run the marketing test on your friends and relations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Release Party!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writing a title that conveys solid information about your book\u2019s contents in a catchy and memorable way is difficult. However, getting a title that works hard to sell your book to its intended audience can have big payoffs down the road.
