They tell the reader who\u2019s talking or what they\u2019re doing, or sometimes they do both. These innocuous critters have stirred up quite the debate in the writing community. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve heard them, whispering in the corners of the coffee shop or library:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cI told you, \u2018said\u2019 is invisible to readers. Why can\u2019t you get that?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cShow me what\u2019s going on, don\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since writing is an individual art, each word-artist holds their opinion close and protected.\u00a0<\/strong> On one side are those who feel adding \u201csaid Imelda\u201d after her speech is perfect. On the other are those who think \u201csaid\u201d should be erased from the entire manuscript. Who\u2019s right?<\/p>\n<h2>Both and neither.<\/h2>\n<p>Frustrated yet? Don\u2019t be. It\u2019s your story, and only you know what will work for your creation. There is a place for both opinions in one story. Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sometimes the best fit is a simple dialogue tag.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes an action tag will bring your readers deeper into your story.<\/li>\n<li>Balancing these two options is a vital piece of the true art of story crafting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As a freelance editor,<\/strong> I\u2019ve noticed a pattern among first time novelists, they are deeply attached to their dialogue tags. So much so, they tend to use them incorrectly and on every line of dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>Take the following example, anyone want to guess why this makes an editor cringe?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThat shuffling corpse over there looks hungry, Abe. Think we should bail?\u201d Eilene asked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yep, don\u2019t tell us Eilene asked a question,<\/strong> we got that when we noticed the nifty wiggle with a dot underneath it at the end. Maybe give us a bit more of what Eilene\u2019s future plans are, is she getting ready to run? Is she firing up her flamethrower. Readers wanna know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThat shuffling corpse over there looks hungry, Abe. Think we should bail?\u201d Eilene wondered how big her lead would be if Abe happen to trip over a not-so-helpful foot.<\/p>\n<p>Bet Eilene\u2019s worrying you about now, uh? Let\u2019s try another one:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cNow we\u2019re having fun,\u201d Eilene smiled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personally, I\u2019ve never quite figured out how to talk the language of smile or sigh or laugh.<\/strong> Laugh has to be the hardest to understand. These are actions, my budding artist, and they need to be treated as such. Don\u2019t forget, smiles, sighs, and laughs are universal, so add some flavor to help paint a picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cNow we\u2019re having fun.\u201d Fierce with viciousness, Eilene\u2019s grin sent chills quaking over flesh.<\/p>\n<p>You ready to run from Eilene yet? Because I\u2019m about four blocks ahead of you at this point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Granted these two examples are great for deepening point of view and getting your reader closer to your story, but they are pure action tags.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still a simple dialogue tag can work. Consider the master of simple but curiously elegant dialogue, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1OCMHNO\" target=\"_blank\">Elmore Leonard<\/a> (and yes, I know one of his rules is never use any tag but \u2018said\u2019) and this example from his FREAKY DEAKY where the police detective, Chris, is staying at his dad\u2019s apartment after being kicked to the curb by his girlfriend.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">His dad said, &#8220;You seem to have a lot of trouble with women. They keep throwing you out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;I do what she wants, she comes up with something else, I don&#8217;t talk to her.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know what it is,&#8221; his dad said, &#8220;you&#8217;re not a bad-looking guy. You could give a little more thought to your grooming. Get your hair trimmed, wear a white shirt now and then, see if that works. What kind of aftershave you use?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Even without the action tags,<\/strong> you get a clear idea of who is saying what, because each voice is distinctive. Did you notice where the dialogue tags fell? Yep, just on dad\u2019s line. When your character voices are unique, you don\u2019t have to tell us who said what on each line, it should be easy to follow.
