Bennett-Wilkes as she shares with us about planning your writing and your writing career and says, \u201cSeriously&#8230;write those plans down.\u201d <em>Enjoy!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Make no little plans, they have no magic to stir men\u2019s blood.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em> &#8211;Daniel Hudson Burnham (Attributed)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Years ago, while searching for my niche as a writer, I stumbled across a\u00a0<em>how to book\u00a0<\/em>on marketing\u00a0<em>for writers\u00a0<\/em>which included an index of activities. These exercises were designed to help novices, aspiring practitioners, and those struggling with self-confidence issues get organized. I plunged into the myriad of possibilities and came up with my ten tips for chroniclers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Item number two of this list says:\u00a0<em>Develop a written plan of action for transforming the vision in your head and heart into reality<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0Those dreams have a far better chance of coming true when committed to paper. As long as they remain ephemeral there\u2019s no opportunity to view them objectively, make assessments, adjustments, or measure progress. Drafting a plan is both empowering and liberating. It\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>the\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>chance to ask \u2013 and answer \u2013 pivotal questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why write?\u00a0<em>Why\u00a0<\/em>do you write or\u00a0<em>why do you want to be\u00a0<\/em>a writer?<\/li>\n<li>If you want to go the\u00a0<strong><em>creative writing\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>route, what are your expectations?<\/li>\n<li>What genres have captured your attention?<\/li>\n<li>How much reading do you do, how often, and what kind of material?<\/li>\n<li>How often do you write? Daily, occasionally, or when you\u2019re in the mood?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to write and get paid?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to write short stories, blog posts, novellas, novels, poetry or is essay writing your thing?<\/li>\n<li>Who are you writing for? And how do you intend to reach this audience?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to be published? In what format(s)?<\/li>\n<li>What do you\u00a0<strong><em>most enjoy\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>about writing?<\/li>\n<li>What aspect of writing do you find\u00a0<strong><em>most stressful<\/em><\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>Do you\u00a0<strong><em>like, love<\/em><\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong><em>live\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to write?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Seriously&#8230;\u00a0<strong><em>you<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<strong>re the only one who knows\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0<strong>even if you<\/strong>\u2019<strong>ve got to do some soul searching to find out &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>sooo&#8230; commit those plans to paper &#8211; write them down!<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve met many a person who admits to dreaming of being a scribe, an editor, or the composer of belles lettres.<\/strong>\u00a0They\u2019ve confessed to investing in outlays comprising writing instruments, paper, computers, furniture &#8211; even space &#8211; to get themselves set up but,\u00a0<strong><em>at the same time<\/em><\/strong>, they\u2019ve shied away from writing their plans out \u2013 fearful of facing a heartfelt desire in black and white. Seriously&#8230;write those plans down. Give yourself a chance to see what they look like.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m an advocate of crafting a literary business plan \u2013 I have one. However, if this approach seems ambitious, start with a list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0<strong><em>I want to<\/em><\/strong>&#8230; and outline as many bullet points as the little gray cells can generate.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Set it aside for twenty-four to forty-eight hours before taking a second look.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Get comfortable in a quiet place \u2013 one conducive to contemplation and reflection. Be sure to have a clipboard and writing utensils handy.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">While conducting this review, eliminate duplications, then cross off the stuff lacking in appeal \u2013 the things you know\u00a0<strong><em>without a doubt\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>you either\u00a0<strong><em>don\u2019t\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>want to do, or\u00a0<strong><em>will not\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>do.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Don\u2019t feel guilty, don\u2019t agonize over these decisions \u2013 be honest with yourself. What remains is the stuff of yearning, strong desire, and passion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Let this revised list set awhile before taking another look.<\/strong>\u00a0Pay attention to the shifts in your thinking \u2013 listen to your body and permit yourself the luxury of hearing yourself think. Ideas which won\u2019t go away are the ones demanding your attention. What are you going to do about them? While mulling over the foregoing, consider this: composing a plan enables the\u00a0<strong><em>enterprising\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>writer to hone her\/his skills; practice her\/his craft, and gain experience. Doesn\u2019t this sound like a win-win proposition? Seriously&#8230;write those plans down.<\/p>\n<p>Committing these dreams and desires to paper offers a means of devising a plan of action which can be revised, updated, evaluated, or monitored.
