“My greatest obstacle is to learn to market my work without fear. Art galleries, publishers, clients, newspaper reporters, all the questions, art receptions; talking about my work with strangers, being the center of attention, it\u2019s overwhelming.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I get e-mails and calls like this a lot. At some point the artists tells me that they are shy, or an introvert, that they absolutely cannot be extroverted. What I say next is not usually what they want to hear \u2013 that they can market without a personality transplant, but that they will have to become more comfortable being “out there.”<\/p>\n

According to Laurie Helgoe, in Introvert Power<\/a>, more than 57% of Americans are actually more introverted than extroverted. Feel better now? \u2028<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Actually there is no such thing as being “an introvert” or “an extrovert” \u2013 we all have a range of introversion to extroversion. A lot of your comfort or discomfort has to do with the situation, how you learn to communicate and how well you prepare for new or uncomfortable encounters.<\/p>\n

Writing about yourself in the privacy of your own studio is a great way to prepare.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t worry about grammar, syntax or spelling.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to answer all of these questions at once. In fact I recommend against that. At most, answer one a day.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t even have to write whole sentences at this stage — words and phrases are a great start.<\/p>\n

Just get your first answers down for now. You can edit and polish later.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. Why and how did you start making art?<\/li>\n
  2. When did you start?<\/li>\n
  3. Did you take any breaks? If so, why and how did you get started again?<\/li>\n
  4. Did you go to art school, take workshops or are you self-taught?<\/li>\n
  5. If you have taken training, how did you make what you learned your own instead of a copy of the instructor\u2019s art?<\/li>\n
  6. Why do you create the kind of art you make?<\/li>\n
  7. What do you like most about making art?<\/li>\n
  8. What do you like least about making art?<\/li>\n
  9. How long did it take you to get good at what you do?<\/li>\n
  10. How do you come up with your ideas?<\/li>\n
  11. What materials and media do you use? Which are your favorites?<\/li>\n
  12. How do you actually make the art?<\/li>\n
  13. How do you know when it\u2019s done?<\/li>\n
  14. How do you decide what frames or pedestals to use? Do you make or buy them?<\/li>\n
  15. Who buys and\/or shows your work? What do they say about it?<\/li>\n
  16. Who are your role models and mentors? What lessons have you learned from them?<\/li>\n
  17. What and who inspires your work?<\/li>\n
  18. What inspires you to keep going when you get stuck?<\/li>\n
  19. Where have you\/do you exhibit your art?<\/li>\n
  20. Do you teach art to others? What do you teach? How did you learn to teach?<\/li>\n
  21. What makes your art different from other artists who also <insert your art form here>?<\/li>\n
  22. What do your collectors say about your art?<\/li>\n
  23. What are your greatest strengths as an artist?<\/li>\n
  24. What\u2019s the best thing about being an artist?<\/li>\n
  25. What\u2019s the worst thing about being an artist?<\/li>\n
  26. What are you most proud of in your art career?<\/li>\n
  27. What mistakes have you made and how did you overcome them?<\/li>\n
  28. What kinds of art and which artists do you like?<\/li>\n
  29. What kinds of art and which artists do you dislike?<\/li>\n
  30. What are you working on now?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Once you\u2019ve written your answers, let them simmer.<\/strong> You\u2019ll notice that other thoughts come to you, so just note them. You can add them later.<\/p>\n

    And when people ask you questions not on this list, add them, and write those answers too.<\/p>\n

    Everything you write will be useful sometime.<\/strong> You\u2019ll use your answers in writing e-mails, blog posts, and social media conversations.<\/p>\n

    As you answer these questions in person or on the telephone, you\u2019ll find new ways to write about them. Pretty soon, you\u2019ll be unstoppable!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
