Today is the third in an 8-post series on planning your novel. In today’s post, we focus on character development. <\/strong>(First published on Writers Fun Zone blog in 2014.)<\/p>\n

***<\/p>\n

If you missed it, the first<\/strong> step in your novel preparation was your elevator pitch<\/a>\u00a0and the second<\/strong> step was crafting your story synopsis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind:<\/strong> Take note of your genre. This will give you a general idea of your story ending and the kinds of characters work best for the story you’re writing.<\/p>\n

Time to budget:<\/strong> I recommend you take 30-60 minutes<\/strong> to do this exercise for each of your main characters. As a suggestion, set your timer for 20 minutes for each of the items below.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brainstorm these essential elements of your main characters to get you started:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Goal, motivation and conflict, for both the inner life and outer life<\/li>\n
  2. Strengths, inherent and learned<\/li>\n
  3. Important relationships<\/li>\n
  4. Appearance<\/li>\n
  5. Education<\/li>\n
  6. Home, living circumstances<\/li>\n
  7. Preferred travel method<\/li>\n
  8. Backstory as it relates to story problem<\/li>\n
  9. The things in her pockets, or backpack, or car, or satchel, etc.<\/li>\n
  10. Habits, mannerisms, ticks<\/li>\n
  11. Other elements and factors that occur to you as interesting or important — jot them down!!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
